## What a dentist's education covers

### The undergraduate degree

A dental degree combines the basic sciences, such as anatomy, physiology and pathology, with supervised clinical training in examining patients and treating teeth and gums. It prepares a graduate to work as a general dentist once licensed.

### Postgraduate oral surgery

Postgraduate training in oral surgery concentrates on surgical procedures in and around the mouth: teeth that have not come through properly, cysts, infections, and the bone that holds the teeth. More time is spent in surgical clinics and the operating theatre than during the degree.

### Continuing education
